Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Polio eradication efforts in Fika Local Government Area (LGA) of Yobe State have faced significant challenges, many of which are tied to geopolitical alignment. Fika, located in the northeastern region of Nigeria, has been affected by political instability, security concerns, and ethnic divisions that have hindered the progress of vaccination campaigns and health programs (Aminu & Ibrahim, 2024). The alignment of local political leaders with state and federal governments, as well as their influence over resource allocation, plays a crucial role in the success of these initiatives.
Additionally, regional tensions, such as those created by the insurgency and inter-ethnic conflicts, further complicate the execution of public health policies, especially in rural and conflict-affected areas. This study will examine the impact of geopolitical alignment on the success of polio eradication efforts in Fika LGA and identify strategies to improve vaccination coverage despite the existing challenges.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite nationwide efforts to eradicate polio, Fika LGA continues to face difficulties in achieving full immunization coverage. Geopolitical factors, including political alignment, ethnic tensions, and security challenges, have undermined vaccination campaigns and contributed to the persistence of polio cases in the region. This study seeks to investigate how these factors have influenced polio eradication efforts and provide recommendations for overcoming them.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute valuable knowledge to the field of public health, particularly in understanding how geopolitical factors affect the implementation of vaccination programs. The findings will be useful for health organizations, local governments, and policymakers seeking to improve polio eradication efforts in conflict-affected and geopolitically divided regions like Fika.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on Fika LGA in Yobe State and examines the impact of geopolitical alignment on polio eradication efforts. Limitations include challenges in obtaining comprehensive vaccination data and addressing the complexities of security-related barriers in the region.
